The first person to have the visionary idea of building a base tunnel through the Gotthard.
The ideas of Basel engineer Eduard Gruner (1905-1984) for a transport route through the Gotthard massif date back as early as the 1930s. He envisioned a base tunnel for road and rail, as separate, combined or even double-deck models. In 1947, he drafted a technical paper for the monthly journal "Prisma. Natur, Forschung, Technik" entitled "Reise durch den Gotthard-Basistunnel im Jahr 2000" ("Journey through the Gotthard Base Tunnel in the year 2000"), in which he set out his visionary concept for an approx. 50 km base tunnel from Amsteg to Biasca. Gruner did not live to see construction of the Gotthard Base Tunnel, which will open this year. Today, his company, the Basel-based Gruner Group, is an engineering and design practice with more than 1,000 employees at over 30 locations in Switzerland and abroad.
Opening of the world's longest rail tunnel
As a member of the Gotthard Base Tunnel North engineering consortium, Gruner Ltd played a key role from 1994 onwards in the design and construction of the Erstfeld and Amsteg tunnel sections.
