New building at Exhibition Center, Basel
The project involved the construction of a new hall complex with three main components: extension of Hall 1 on the Messeplatz (Exhibition Square) front, a new building to replace the previous Hall 3, and a link above Messeplatz between the two hall complexes (City Lounge). The halls comprise one basement, one ground-floor and two upper levels. The size of the overall complex, including the two-story trussed assembly spanning Messeplatz, runs to 220 x 90 x 32 m (L x W x H). Apart from new exhibition spaces (approx. 40,000m2), the facility mix also includes a multi-purpose events venue (approx. 3,500m2), restaurants, offices and plantrooms. The exhibition halls are connected below ground by a tunnel. The main floors take the form of reinforced-concrete beam grillages, with precast deck panels and concrete topping, and are carried by a steelwork primary structural frame.
