"Wohngenossenschaft 1943" housing cooperative, Jakobsberg, Basel
Treading a fine line between conservation and redefinition
The housing stock of the "Wohngenossenschaft 1943" cooperative encompassed some 128 small-sized apartments in various properties. On the basis of a condition survey, Gruner developed a concept for an energy-efficient upgrade of the building envelopes. The alteration works not only served to maintain the value of the properties, but also added value by extending the living space. In one property, the refurbishment concept entailed wholesale renovation including reconfiguration of the apartment layouts. The scale of the intervention necessitated the development of architectural solutions to preserve the character of the local streetscape.
