Lowering of the Zentralbahn railway, Lucerne

Tunnel safety project

Coming from the direction of Allmend via the densely populated Moosmatt district, the meter-gauge Zentralbahn railroad reaches the Lucerne station infrastructure at Steghof. It currently has to pass barrier crossings on Eichmattstrasse, Horwerstrasse, Moosmattstrasse and Steghofstrasse. In connection with work to expand the Zentralbahn railway to two tracks, the stretch of line within the city of Lucerne is to be lowered.

The over 1,300 m tunnel system that is needed comprises the following three elements:

  • Hubelmatt Tunnel: Approx. 560 m, worked underground
  • Underground station at Allmend: Located near the new Messe Luzern trade fair center, the stop has an island platform which is to be made accessible via three staircases and an elevator.
  • Allmend Tunnel: Approx. 480 m, rectangular profile, to be constructed by the cut-and-cover method.
