Remedial school,

Münchenstein

The first floor of the project comprises four cubes with classrooms, all grouped around a roof terrace with an atrium that extends down to the ground floor. This houses a recreation hall with additional classrooms and kindergarten rooms, a multi-purpose room and dining room, plus a library and offices. In producing their timber construction design, the Gruner Ltd engineers responsible for technical planning had to take on board the following requirements: the uniform ground floor height required low overall ceiling thicknesses for the large rooms and corridors and the installation of pipe and cable runs on their undersides. The differing uses of the first and ground floor rooms and different wall partitions necessitated the inclusion of a transfer slab. The soundproofing between the classrooms had to satisfy enhanced requirements. The timber construction on the upper floor only permitted slight ceiling deflection.
