Roller mills at cement plant in M'Sila, Algeria

An existing roller mill at a cement plant in M'Sila, Algeria was identified as the cause of abnormal vibrations suffered by an adjoining electrical substation. Measurements were taken
- to establish the vibration modes of the roller mill, and
- to determine the elastic properties of the subsoil.

The subsoil was found to exhibit inadequate stiffness to accommodate the vibration generated by the mill. This led to resonance. As it was unfeasible to perform any remedial works on the 5 m thick mill foundation, special anti-vibration mountings were installed to serve as a protective base for the substation equipment. A suitably dimensioned vibration isolation assembly was also successfully installed for the foundation of a further mill.
