Belchen tunnel, Eptingen

Vibration monitoring

The ventilation shafts of this 3.2-km twin-tube road tunnel on the A2 freeway were renewed between 2011 and 2013. The vibrations caused by the demolition works were monitored on behalf of the Federal Roads Office (FEDRO).

Monitoring helped to protect motorists in both tubes of the Belchen tunnel from hazards that the vibrations associated with the demolition might have caused. It also helped to prevent the failure of the operational and safety systems that are essential for safe use of the tunnel.

  • Primary goal:  To eliminate hazards to motorists while work was in progress
  • Secondary goal: To avoid failure of operating and safety systems
  • Multi-sensor measuring system
