Klinik Gais hospital, Appenzell
Seismic safety assessment and retrofit
The Klinik Gais hospital in Appenzell opened in 1965 and was repeatedly extended in the years up to 2008. As a result of the various additions and modifications, the building consists of a large number of interconnected sections constructed using a variety of methods. Today the hospital specializes in cardiac (heart) and psychosomatic/psychotherapeutic (burnout) rehabilitation.
Following modifications to the 7-floor ward block, Klinik Gais AG commissioned us to carry out a seismic safety assessment of the entire hospital. Given the low compliance factor (low seismic safety), a phased seismic retrofit of the ward block is now being carried out.
The biggest challenges are ensuring the work does not interfere with normal hospital operations and mini-mizing structure-borne and airborne noise as much as possible.
The buildings, most of which are masonry walled, will be retrofitted by means of "seismic wallpaper".
