Waldacker Bridge, St. Gallen
SOB railway bridge over SBB track
Designed as a composite steel arch bridge with concrete trough, the new Waldacker Bridge in St. Gallen was constructed parallel to the existing Südostbahn (SOB) structure over the SBB (Swiss Federal Railways) track. The bridge was inserted within a time window of only 35 hours, during which SOB services were suspended. The existing abutments were refurbished and strengthened without any interruption to SBB and SOB services. The new structure was designed to resist impact loads. Micropile foundations, tieback anchors etc. had to be installed under severe spatial constraints. Noise control measures were also implemented.
The new bridge was designed in collaboration with the city of St. Gallen Public Buildings Department and Historic Landmark Commission.
