Shallow Urban Railway Tunnel, tunnel and underground station " Champel-Hôpital"

The Cornavin - Eaux-Vives – Annemasse (CEVA) project, currently under construction in Geneva, is a new, cross-border, double-track rail link connecting Geneva’s city centre with neighbouring areas in Switzerland and France. Almost a million residents in the Geneva region will benefit from this unique project. The majority of the 16 km long railroad line, roughly two thirds, will be built underground.

Stucky’s tunnel engineering team is in charge of the challenging Champel section of the tunnel, which runs from the River Arve to the Eaux-Vives railway station passing below the most densely populated part of Geneva. The 1.4 kilometre tunnel is bored, at a depth of 10 to 30 metres under existing buildings and surface infrastructure. In the middle of the tunnel, the 220 metre long Champel-Hôpital underground station is being built at the bottom of a 25 metre deep vertical shaft. The tunnel construction and the railway station are scheduled for completion in 2017.
