Renovation and extension, residential retirement and nursing home in Brunnmatt
The existing residential retirement home was modernized and a 39-room extension plus modern restaurant was added.
The greatest challenge facing the designers was the sloping site of the new building. For one thing, the slope needed to be fully stabilized both during construction and subsequently; and for another, complex calculations were required to ensure that the building would withstand the horizontal pressures produced by earthquakes in combination with the downward pressure from the sloping ground. The aim of this was to reduce the internal reinforcing concrete walls to a minimum, thus providing the client with genuine gains plus the greatest possible flexibility for later changes of use.
