Comprehensive Rehabilitation of the Storchenbrücke Bridge in Winterthur

The Storchenbrücke is one of Winterthur’s most important transport links. Every day, it is used by cars, buses, pedestrians and cyclists. The bridge connects Zürcherstrasse with Untere Vogelsangstrasse while spanning several SBB railway tracks and the freight yard. After almost 30 years in service, the structure has undergone comprehensive rehabilitation to ensure its long-term functionality.

The rehabilitation presented significant planning and construction challenges. All work was carried out above a heavily used railway corridor and had to be closely coordinated with SBB operational requirements. At the same time, it was essential to minimise disruptions to road traffic while sustainably strengthening the existing structure.

Gruner supported the project throughout every phase of the rehabilitation. The work included replacing the road surfacing and waterproofing system, renewing pedestrian and cycleway surfaces, and replacing the bridge railing and protective roof above the railway tracks in accordance with current standards. Safety barriers were also replaced, and key structural elements were repaired. This included corrosion protection of the pylon and the complete replacement of the hold-down rods, whose anchorage areas had deteriorated over time.

The rehabilitation has brought the Storchenbrücke up to current technical standards while significantly extending its service life. At the same time, the project improves safety for all road users and ensures that the bridge continues to fulfil its vital role within Winterthur’s transport network.
