Highway junction, Brüttisellen

Infrastructure

The Brüttisellen motorway junction, a central traffic hub in Switzerland, had to be raised and extensively repaired due to severe stresses in the superstructure. The GWBP engineering association, of which Gruner was in charge, was responsible for project planning and construction management.

The stresses in the superstructure were caused by large differential settlements, which resulted in considerable structural problems. To remedy these, the bridges had to be raised by up to 15 cm. This lifting required extensive alignment work, which had to be precisely planned and executed to ensure the structural integrity and safety of the bridges.

A central component of the repair was the reinforcement and modification of the steel structure to ensure structural safety in accordance with current standards.

A particular challenge of the project was the traffic management. During the entire construction period, traffic had to be channelled on only two lanes in both directions. This posed a considerable logistical challenge, as the Brüttisellen junction is frequented by around 130,000 vehicles every day.

After intensive work, the project was completed in 2014 with the repair of the corrosion protection. The successful implementation ensures the long-term functionality and safety of the Brüttisellen junction and ensures that it can continue to cope with the high traffic loads in the future.
