design of the ventilation system of the Flachgauer tunnel

including emergency ventilation in the event of a fire.

The Flachgauer tunnel, which runs between Salzburg and Köstendorf, is 16.5 kilometres long and is part of a high-performance line that is scheduled to be completed by 2032. The Flachgauer tunnel consists of two single-track tubes that are connected every 500 m with cross passages, which serve to escape into the opposite, safe tube and in which also contain the technical rooms with the technical equipment.

In case of a fire incident, fresh air is brought into the safe opposite via two ventilation centers located in the portal areas tube in order to generate overpressure there, which prevents significant smoke from entering through open cross passages.

Gruner provided the planning and design services for the tunnel ventilation system.

The services provided by Gruner are

  • Variant study of emergency ventilation,
  • environmental impact assessment and railway law submission planning in the areas of tunnel ventilation,
  • tunnel climate,
  • tunnel aerodynamics,
  • site ventilation and air conditioning of the cross passages
