Refurbishment and Extension, Kreuzstrasse 82, Zurich

Refurbishment with removal of load-bearing walls and new timber-concrete composite slab

The office building at Kreuzstrasse 82 in Zurich was extensively refurbished and extended. As part of the project, the existing attic floor was demolished and the remaining five storeys were extended with two additional residential floors in modern timber construction.

A structural analysis was carried out to verify the additional loads resulting from the extension. The refurbishment included the removal of load-bearing walls within the existing structure. An earthquake assessment followed by strengthening measures ensured compliance with current safety standards.

To improve fire and structural safety, new concrete elements were added, including a fire wall and an innovative timber-concrete composite slab. This combination of refurbishment, timber extension and targeted reinforcement modernised the building at Kreuzstrasse 82 sustainably and adapted it for contemporary use.
