The SBB Büchliweg underpass in Rheinfelden was built in 1875 and completely renovated in 1971. After more than 50 years of operation, further refurbishment was required to ensure the long-term functionality and safety of the structure. The underpass connects pedestrians, cyclists, agriculture, and local services with the town of Rheinfelden, making it an important piece of infrastructure.

Full closure of the SBB Basel–Zurich line from Friday evening to Sunday evening
Construction Process

Removal of the tracks at the start of the closure

Precision removal of the existing bridge using an SPMT (Self-Propelled Modular Transporter)

Demolition of the old abutments

Installation of the new bridge deck with integrated abutments in one piece

Reinstallation of the track systems on Sunday

Resumption of railway operations during the night from Sunday to Monday
The renovation was completed on schedule, and the railway line was returned to service as planned. With the replacement of the bridge deck and refurbishment of the abutments, the underpass has been strengthened for another service life of approximately 80 years.
