Site development: A comprehensive approach to building construction and mobility

Which should be designed first – the site or the transport links to it? There is only one correct answer: both at the same time. Gruner brings together mobility and transport engineering, building construction and spatial development right from the start – thereby laying the foundations for sites that will function effectively in the long term.

The more people live, work or come and go in a given area, the more traffic there is. This requires suitable transport links – by public transport, on foot, by bicycle and by private motorised transport. Conversely, transport links help determine how densely an area is developed and how it can be used.

Coordinating both aspects at an early stage creates more flexibility for development and avoids the need for costly rectifications later on. 

Why mobility and transport engineering are crucial for site development

A site with excellent public transport links can be developed differently – and, under certain circumstances, more densely – than a location with limited accessibility. If, on the other hand, transport engineering is only incorporated at a late stage, projects that are already at an advanced stage may run into difficulties: for example, due to congested junctions, a lack of cycle routes or conflicts over the use of public space. 

Retrospective adjustments are not only costly; they can also limit the possibilities for further site development and the quality of the environment.

Combining building construction, spatial development and mobility

Transport engineering is therefore far more than simply determining the dimensions of roads, access routes or car parks. It lays an important foundation for ensuring that a site functions effectively in the long term.

New tram tracks above Basel’s underground river

Fire safety on Mount Titlis: exceptional conditions at 3,020 metres

As part of the renovation and expansion project on Mount Titlis, the Titlis Tower opened in June 2026, with the new Titlis Peak Station to follow in 2029. Gruner is responsible for fire safety for this major project designed by Herzog & de Meuron. The unique conditions at more than 3,000 metres above sea level place particularly high demands on fire safety.

LSVA III: Completion of the first new stationary recording systems

Since the beginning of 2026, the new generation of LSVA recording systems has been progressively rolled out across Switzerland. The systems record journey data from heavy goods vehicles and help ensure that the heavy vehicle charge is calculated correctly. Gruner is planning and implementing several recording sites, making an important contribution to the rollout of the new infrastructure.
