Freight Overtaking Track and Reduced Train Headways in Pfäffikon (SZ)

The service enhancement planned as part of the STEP AS2025 expansion programme, introducing a half-hourly IC service between Zurich and Chur, requires a new freight overtaking track with a usable length of 750 m for east-west traffic (Buchs/Chur – RBL) near Pfäffikon (SZ). The systematic half-hourly freight train scheduling makes increased block density in the overtaking track area essential. Due to the high frequency of train movements, improvements to train headways as well as the replacement of the railway technology building and service building are also required.

  • Construction of a new freight overtaking track for freight trains up to 750 m in length, including track alignment
  • Two new movable frog turnouts of type EW-1600-1:25
  • Impact protection for the piers of the motorway access road overpass
  • Construction of new retaining structures (retaining walls and gabion walls) over a length of 800 m with an average height of 8.0 m
  • Adaptation of utility lines and culverts
  • Replacement of the 15 kV high-voltage feeder cable
  • Relocation of existing cable ducts and replacement of feeder lines with individual masts
