Belgrade’s first metro takes shape – with Gruner on board

Gruner has signed a contract with the Jaroslav Černi Water Institute and will contribute to the design development of Line 1 of the Belgrade Metro. The project is part of Serbia’s future first metro system and ranks among the key infrastructure projects in the capital region.

Belgrade is moving ahead with the development of its first metro system. Line 1 is a central component of the future network. With a length of 15km and 15 stations it is intended to better connect heavily used urban areas of the Serbian capital and increase public transport capacity of the growing metropolis.

By signing the contract with the Jaroslav Černi Water Institute on 9 June, Gruner formally joined the Belgrade Metro project and will contribute its engineering expertise to the design development of Line 1. The Jaroslav Černi Water Institute is a leading Serbian engineering and research organisation specialising in infrastructure planning.

A further step in Gruner’s international development

«Gruner’s involvement in the Belgrade Metro is an important next step in our international development. The mandate shows how we are bringing our infrastructure expertise beyond Switzerland in a targeted way and further expanding our capabilities in complex urban mobility projects,» says Olivier Aebi, CEO of Gruner.

Regional presence as a strength

With this mandate, Gruner marks another milestone in the international expansion of its infrastructure business and strengthens its position in Southeast Europe. «The Belgrade Metro is a project of great importance for Serbia and the entire region. For us, it is particularly valuable to combine technical expertise with local understanding and contribute to a mobility project that will shape Belgrade in the long term,» says Cane Cekerevac, Head of Energy Eastern Europe & Central Asia at Gruner.

Vlada Šumarac, Branch Officer of Gruner Balkans, will lead Gruner’s contribution to the project locally. He will coordinate Gruner’s involvement on the ground and support the collaboration with the Jaroslav Černi Water Institute as contractual partner and the wider Belgrade Metro project team.
