Dreispitz Junction, Basel

On Münchensteinerstrasse, between the cantonal border BS/BL and Dornacherstrasse, extensive renovation work was required to ensure the long-term functionality of the urban infrastructure. The adjoining feeder roads, Walkeweg and Brüglingerstrasse, were also refurbished. As part of these works, the street space was adapted to meet current legal requirements and standards.

Gruner AG provided services for all SIA phases starting from the construction project and approval process, including tendering, implementation planning, and site management.New continuous cycle lanes were installed in both directions along the entire length of Münchensteinerstrasse and across the junction. These lanes separate car and bicycle traffic, significantly increasing road safety. All existing car lanes were retained. Coming from Wolfgottesacker, a separate right-turn lane from Münchensteinerstrasse into Dornacherstrasse was added. A total of 16 new trees were planted along Münchensteinerstrasse, eight of which replaced existing trees removed to make space for the cycle lanes. The tree line now extends to Leimgrubenweg, and the accompanying green verge remains intact. The new grass track bed of the railway system (approx. 1,060 m²) helps to reduce heat in the area.

The Dreispitz stops now offer passengers step-free access to trams and buses. The tram stop towards Münchenstein was significantly widened, while the stop towards Basel SBB was moved opposite to the new Irène Zurkinden Square. This creates comfortable and direct interchange options between trams, buses, and the nearby Dreispitz S-Bahn station. The bus stops remain as on-road stops (concrete surface) at Walkeweg.

The road renovation also included adjustments to the railway infrastructure (superstructure and substructure including overhead line systems) and utility lines.
