Between 2020 and 2023, the St. Karlshof extension project in Zug, Switzerland was carried out as a comprehensive construction and renovation scheme. The aim was the complete renovation of a historic ensemble listed as a protected monument. Alongside the careful heritage restoration of the existing buildings, the project included extensive conversion works in solid construction, steel and wood to modernise the building fabric while preserving its original character. A central focus was on earthquake retrofitting and seismic strengthening to ensure the long-term protection and safety of the complex.
In addition, a new underground car park on the hillside was built, including a full excavation pit, complemented by the construction of new access roads to the south and north with stabilising retaining walls. The technical infrastructure was also upgraded: the drainage and sewerage systems were renewed and expanded, stormwater retention measures were implemented and detailed utility line planning was carried out.
This project, implemented in Zug between 2020 and 2023, successfully combines heritage building renovation, earthquake strengthening, modern construction methods and sustainable infrastructure development in Switzerland.
