Wärmeversorgung Zürich West

The waste-to-energy power plant (CHP) on Josefstrasse was decommissioned in 2021. The power plant fed the existing Zurich West district heating network. To maintain the heat supply and expand the district heating network, a connecting pipeline was planned between the Zurich North (Hagenholz) and Zurich West (Josefstrasse) waste-to-energy plants. For this purpose, connecting structures were required on both sides. The Josefstrasse connection structure was designed as an energy center and essentially comprises a pumping station for the connecting line, peak-load boilers, heat storage tanks and an expansion plant. The construction of the energy center was carried out while the waste incineration plant was in operation. The supply of the district heating network therefore had to be ensured during the conversion phase. In addition to the district heating supply along the connecting pipeline and the expansion in Zurich West, an additional district heating supply is also planned in the area south of the track field between the Wiedikon railroad line and Langstrasse.
