Upgrading the Limmatquai and Utoquai

A new boulevard promenade based on the sponge city principle

The important Zurich urban space at the interface between the old town, Limmat and lake on Limmatquai and Utoquai is to be significantly upgraded. The aims are to improve the quality of stay, take measures to reduce heat and achieve sustainable water management. To this end, the paved areas will be unsealed and more space will be created for pedestrians and cyclists.

The focus is on new traffic routing, unsealing the traffic surfaces and more trees and places to sit. The space will be implemented according to the sponge city principle:

  • Additional tree planting with
      • optimized water supply via "short-circuit pipe" to the Limmat
      •  a surface water supply to the tree pits
      • enlarged root space in the footpath area
      • Root substrate that can be built over
  • Natural stone paving with open joints in the sidewalk and square areas
  • Cycle path and islands with drainage-compatible surfacing

Gruner is responsible for the preliminary project, the construction project and the approval. The large tree pits were developed together with Ramboll.
